What are the signs of Canine Prostatic Disease?

When a dog’s prostate becomes enlarged, it becomes predisposed to cysts or infections. If your pooch has a problem with his prostate, he may strain to urinate or have blood in his urine. In more severe cases, a dog might become systemically ill or even collapse.

Although prostatic disease is most common in non-neutered dogs, Mary Mclaughlin, a small animal surgeon at Ohio State University, recommends that all male dogs be examined annually.

She says, “certainly palpation of the prostate determining whether its in the appropriate position, the appropriate size, whether its symmetrical, whether its irregular or smooth.”

If abnormalities are detected, medication, neutering, or surgery may be recommended to protect your pet.
